Algae Cooking Oil vs Algae Oil Supplements: They Are Not the Same
This is the most common mix-up in the whole algae category, so let us kill it fast. Algae cooking oil and algae oil supplements both come from algae, and that is where the similarity ends. One is a fat you cook with. The other is an omega-3 you swallow for your brain and heart. Buying one expecting the other will disappoint you.
What algae cooking oil actually is
Two brands matter here. Algae Cooking Club is the best known. Thrive is the other, and it has the stranger history: Corbion brought the first culinary algae oil to market, discontinued it in 2020, and Wolfson relaunched the brand in 2024 using Corbion product. Both sell an oil rich in omega-9, a monounsaturated fat, the same family as the main fat in olive and avocado oil. It has a very high smoke point, several times the oxidative stability of avocado oil, and a neutral, slightly buttery flavor. It is a superb searing, frying, and baking oil, and a clean alternative to seed oils.
On price, be careful which number you are reading. One 16 oz bottle from Algae Cooking Club is $22.99. The $20 figure quoted all over the internet, including in an earlier version of this page, is never the price of one bottle: it is either the per-bottle price on the discounted 2-pack, or the $20.69 subscribe-and-save price that commits you to repeat deliveries. Buy four at once and it drops to $17 a bottle.
Watch the word "with"
Here is the trap, and it is a new one. Exactly one Thrive bottle is pure algae oil, the Reserve at $39.99, and it is the most expensive thing they sell. Five others carry "with Algae Oil" in the name and are blends running 85% to 90% omega-9, priced $21.99 to $24.99. Somebody who grabs the cheapest bottle with ALGAE on the label is buying mostly something else. It is the same lesson the supplement aisle teaches: the front of the bottle is marketing, the back of the bottle is the product. What it is not: an omega-3 supplement. It contains essentially none of the EPA and DHA that the capsules on this site are for. Omega-9 is a fine fat, but your body can make omega-9 on its own. It cannot make EPA and DHA, which is the entire reason omega-3 supplements exist.

Should you buy the cooking oil?
Yes, if you want a high-smoke-point, seed-oil-free cooking fat and you like the sustainability story. It is a genuinely good product for what it does. Just buy it as a cooking oil, not as your omega-3. If you want EPA and DHA, you need the capsules, and no amount of cooking with algae oil will replace them.
